NO Climbing
Their rules are pretty clear, climbing is not permitted. It is actually against the law to climb on the rock formations. It is dangerous and you'll receive a ticket from a ranger if caught. The dust staining your clothes is definitely not worth it either.
Your well being is important so if you are not in proper health, it is advised to not take the whole hike. Anything can happen out there, so if you have health restrictions then you should probably make it short by going through only one set of Canyons. Taking breaks when feeling tired and staying close to the entrance point is key to a safe hike .
Proper Attire
Red clay is absolutely everywhere so having proper attire is crucial to not ruining your clothes and shoes. First lets discuss shoes, it's essential that you have hiking shoes or comfortable sneakers with grip. The canyons constantly have streams and puddles along the canyon floor, so make sure the shoes you wear can get muddy.
Next is clothing, even on a chilly day a heavy jacket won't be necessary. As you start to hike you'll warm up and regret hauling around a sweater later. A light jacket, backpack and jeans, or shorts depending on the time of year. Since that red clay is abundant and will stain clothing, make sure you stay away from white and light greys garmets.
Preparing your Body
Taking the time to properly train your body is important. It's sometimes the last thing on your mind when you plan things to do on vacation. If you are not a seasoned hiker it's advised to prep for a few days before, on a treadmill.
Practicing going uphill AND downhill on a steep plain is the perfect way to get you physically and mentally prepared for what you have planned at Providence Canyons. Being prepared is essential, the last thing you want is to be halfway through the hike tired, body in pain and a long way back.
